 In
1994, Institute for European
Studies of Shandong University
(IESSDU) was founded by some
scholars mainly from the School
of International Politics(SIP),
based on a long time of the
scientific research and teaching
of the history of European
political thoughts, the politics
of the European regions and the
EU's member states. Though
closely cooperated with the SIP,
it was an independent institute,
focusing on undertaking research
projects and also offering
courses in European politics for
both graduate and undergraduate
students.
In 1997, the
IESSDU reconstructed itself into
European Studies Center of
Shandong University(ESCSDU).
After the initiation of the
EU-China Higher Education
Cooperation Programme, the
ESCSDU was selected by the
Academic Committee of the
EU-China Higher Education
Cooperation Programme(EUCHECP)
as one of the 11 key ESCs in the
framework of the EUCHEP, and has
been supported financially by
the Programme. Since then, the
ESCSDU has taken more
responsibility of coordinating
and organizing the research and
teaching work in the field of
European studies in Shandong
University and other
universities in Shandong
Province.
At the moment,
the ESCSDU has 10 full-time
institute members and some 10
part-time research fellows. The
SIP, the Economic School, the
Business School, the School of
History and Culture and the
Department of Sociology, etc.
are actively involved in the
European studies within the
framework of the ESCSDU.
